Bio-identical Hormone Therapy (BHRT): What It Is, How It Helps, and Why I Chose It
Understanding BHRT in Menopause—Without the Confusion, Shame, or Pressure
This article is for educational purposes only, and should not be used in place of an actual doctor's visit. If you’d like personalized guidance, I’d be honored to connect in an Introductory Call.
Let’s be real: menopause doesn’t come with a manual.
If you’re navigating perimenopause or menopause, you might be feeling foggy, irritable, bone-tired, or disconnected from your own body. Maybe you’ve found yourself staring into the fridge, forgetting what you were looking for. Or wondering why your mood is swinging wildly while everyone else seems “fine.”
You are not alone—and you are not crazy.
For so long, hormone therapy has been a confusing and controversial topic, and it’s no wonder why. Between conflicting headlines and outdated studies, many of us were left thinking hormone replacement therapy was dangerous, “unnatural,” or simply not worth the risk.
But now, we have better information. And we have options.
So... What Is BHRT, Really?
Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that are chemically identical to those your body naturally produces. These can be delivered via creams, gels, patches, pellets, or pills, and are personalized based on your symptoms and hormone levels.
BHRT differs from traditional HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy), which typically uses synthetic or animal-derived hormones. The key distinction? Bio-identical hormones are designed to match your body’s own chemistry, potentially offering a gentler, more tailored approach.
Why Women Are Turning Toward BHRT
Because it’s not just about “getting rid of hot flashes.” BHRT is about reclaiming clarity, vitality, and connection to yourself.
Studies and clinical experience suggest BHRT may support:
Improved mood and mental clarity
More restful sleep
Better sexual function and libido
Bone density and heart health
Weight management and metabolic balance
But it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. And that’s exactly why I created a guide to help you understand the risks, benefits, and nuances before making a decision. You’ll be able to prepare for having an informed conversation with your doctor about whether or not it’s right for you.
My Story: Why I Chose BHRT
I spent years doing chasing all the lifestyle ways to address my menopausal symptoms—various ways of eating, a personal trainer, trying to prioritizing self-care. And still, my menopausal transition brought unexpected waves: sleep disrupted, energy inconsistent, and a kind of inner static I couldn’t turn off.
After years of chasing this elusive natural approach with little success at managing consistently my menopausal symptoms, I came to a truth I had been resisting: I needed more support. I decided to go on BHRT after working in a BHRT clinic as a health coach, reviewing the research and consulting a doctor I trusted. This wasn’t a snap decision—it was informed, intentional, and ultimately, empowering. I only wished I had made it sooner.

Juliana’s Story, 48
Symptoms: Sleep disturbances, low libido, mood swings, brain fog
What helped: Juliana tracked her symptoms and discussed them with her functional medicine doctor. After reviewing her labs and family history, they agreed to try BHRT—starting with low-dose estrogen and progesterone. Within three months, Juliana reported sleeping through the night for the first time in years, a clearer head, and a return of her sense of humor.
"It felt like a light came back on in me. I could finally hold a thought long enough to finish it—and laugh again."
Nia’s Story, 53
Symptoms: Vaginal dryness, joint pain, weight gain around the middle
What helped: Nia had concerns about HRT based on outdated studies. But her doctor walked her through the current data and helped her understand the difference between synthetic HRT and BHRT. With a customized plan including DHEA and topical estrogen, her symptoms improved significantly.
"I was skeptical at first, but the shift was undeniable. I feel more grounded and more like myself—not a ghost of who I used to be."
